How to Hire a Dry Bulk Shipbroker

What owners, operators and broking houses should assess when appointing dry bulk brokers at desk head or producer level.

Dry bulk broking remains one of the most relationship-driven disciplines in commercial shipping. When hiring a shipbroker, clients are not simply buying CV credentials. They are buying market access, fixture discipline and the ability to represent the desk credibly with owners, charterers and counterparties.

Define the desk mandate clearly

Before outreach begins, clarify whether the role is coverage-led, originator-led or a hybrid. A broker joining an established desk requires different attributes from someone expected to build a new segment or geography. Segment focus (Capesize, Panamax, Supramax or Handysize) and cargo specialism should be explicit in the brief.

Assess commercial evidence, not just relationships

Strong brokers combine a network with consistent execution. Evaluate fixture history, post-fixture discipline, communication under pressure and the ability to work with operators and research colleagues. For senior appointments, leadership, mentoring and business development capability matter as much as personal production.
